Excellent article, I have a question though and you seem to be very well versed in the topic. I’ve been a ham for a little while, a general class to be clear, and I’ve seen tons of videos concerning digital communications, yet I seldom see anyone show what and/or how to connect the equipment used for digital communications. Maybe I’ve been looking in the wrong places, but I would definitely like to see how these digital devices are used together to make communications, could you possibly point me in the right direction?

Look up Dave Kessler (KE0OG) on YouTube. Also look up Josh HamRadioCrashCourse, also on Youtube. Those guys are a good place to start. I don’t really do videos these days, and don’t really have the equipment to create and edit such things, so I tend to use “Words” and writing hihi.

I started with radio when I was but a wee child. I was eight when I built my first crystal radio. That was sixty years ago this year. At ten, I received a couple of broken Shortwave radios from a neighbor, a Zenith and a portable radio (I have long since forgotten the make and model) - the Zenith underwent a capacitor swap-out (I was learning how to solder) and I replace a couple of tubes and it came alive. I spend the next few years listing to Shortwave.

When I joined the military (USAF) I became a radio repairman, but not before I’d already owned a Television repair shop in my basement. I retired from Missile Defense as an engineer. In any case I’ve been doing this a long time.

Digital communications are not new, Radio Teletype came into being many decades ago. Morse Code is technically the “first digital communications” and existed long before Amplitude Modulation… So, remember, there is no “mystery”. Just takes education. Good Luck.

Thank you for your response, and recommendations. I am familiar with both of those YouTube channels, l also enjoy the Tech Prepper as well as OH8STN

Thanks for this valuable information! And while it is written and especially useful for ham radio education, it has application well beyond amateur radio. Great job, well done.
