I’m going to introduce Ghostnet, the apparent brainchild of S2_Underground. For those who are not, or weren’t in the military (specifically the Army) there are sections in the US Army designating basic areas of expertise. S2 is the intelligence/communications function. In the Air Force we don’t have such “deliberate functional designations”; at least not precisely.
For our purposes, we are not too worried about S1, S2 or any such militry designations at this point. For OUR purposes we will be dealing with legal FCC-in-the-US designated frequencies, modes of operation, and will stick to all the legal aspects of using standard radio communications during a non-wartime situation. If and when the FCC or Federal Government ceases to exist then all our communications training to “remain legal” essentially will “go out the window”.
THAT SAID, please do NOT operate transmitters in the Amateur Band unless you’re licensed to do so. The results of doing so can and will get you heavily fined, your equipment confiscated and there could be jail time involved if your operations interfere with on-going, legal communications or causes someone to be put in danger.
GhostNet Overview
VERSION 1.1
GhostNet is the overarching term for a collection of communications networks set up to allow users around the world to exchange information without relying on pre-established infrastructure. Far from being just an emergency plan, GhostNet is intended to ease the transition of radio technology into everyday life. Though radio networks cannot truly replace the internet, we hope that we can replace a substantial portion of a person’s daily information requirements, and promote a culture of off-grid information sharing.
Now that this is out of the way for MY purposes at this time, Ghostnet is a JS8 mode of operation.
I am going to provide a link to an introductory video by S2_underground, and several other links to read through information.
I have no connection with the person creating this other than we’re both hams. I don’t know him, his name, his call sign or any other information, and I understand his position on wanting to remain “Anonymous” (as possible) at this time and to be honest, I am not too concerned about remaining anonymous, which is why I use my call sign and name. I’ve got 44 years of military, government and contracting service with the US Government. I can’t “hide” and have no intention of doing so. I believe in standing UP and facing down the enemy, and if that enemy is slowly taking over our own government, then so be it. They are more afraid of us, than we are of them. My oath didn’t expire.

I hope to see you on JS8. I normally monitor either 20m or 40m lately. My BPQ BBS can be accessed through other local BBSes in your area (If you’re familiar with packet radio you can find this easily.)

If you are unlicensed or don't have an HF radio, this is a great way to start building familiarity with the software that's needed, without having to buy anything. The caveat is that this method requires a steady internet connection, so it's not great for off grid use.
In the end, we want to be able to listen in and be “off grid” is the SHTF.
